HRMC Primary Stroke Center Earns Performance Award

Hackettstown Regional Medical Center's Primary Stroke Center has earned the Get With The Guidelines SilverThe American Heart Association and American Stroke Association recognize this hospital for achieving at least 12 consecutive months of 85% or higher adherence to all Get With The Guidelines Stroke Performance Achievement indicators and at least 12 consecutive months of 75% or higher compliance with 6 of 10 Get With The Guidelines Stroke Quality Measures to improve quality of patient care and outcomes. Performance Award from the American Heart Association/ American Stroke Association. HRMC is also designated as a Primary Stroke Center by the Joint Commission, having earned the Gold Seal of Approval in 2009.

HRMC's Stroke coordinator Karen Young, RN, emphasizes, "Stroke is one of the most preventable of all life-threatening health problems, provided that you pay proper attention to lifestyle and medical risk factors, such as smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. Furthermore, treatment exists to help minimize the effects of a stroke; however, it must be given within 3 hours of the first symptom. It is important to recognize the symptoms of stroke and seek emergency medical attention. Recognizing stroke symptoms can be easy if you learn to act F.A.S.T. After the initial assessment, the patient will receive ongoing follow-up care by one of HRMC's on-staff consultant neurologists."

Evening of Inspiration Features World Renowned Dr. Ben Carson

Author of Gifted Hands, THINK BIG, The Big Picture and Take the Risk: Learning to Identify, Choose and Live with Acceptable Risk, Dr. Benjamin S. Carson is the keynote speaker for Hackettstown Regional Medical Centers 2010 Evening of Inspiration.

In 1987, Dr. Carson gained worldwide recognition for leading a team in the successful separation of conjoined twins. The 22-hour surgery was the first of its kind to separate twins joined at the head without fatalities to either infant. Dr. Carson is the director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md.

Born in Detroit, Michigan, Carson was raised by his mother, a single parent who struggled to make ends meet, working two and three jobs at a time. He was challenged by living in poverty, receiving poor grades, exhibiting a horrible temper and suffering from low self-esteem.
