Hackettstown Medical Center's Wound Healing Center recently received accreditation from the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) for its Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy program. UHMS accreditation means that Hackettstown Medical Center's Wound Healing Center has met the highest standards of care and patient safety following a rigorous evaluation of the facility, equipment, staff and training.
"Hackettstown Medical Center's Wound Healing Center is one of only a handful of Wound Centers in the country whose Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy program is accredited," stated Program Director Joanne Caldiero, RN. She credits Karen Young, RN, former Wound Care Director and Clinical Nurse Specialist at Hackettstown Medical Center, with coordinating the lengthy accreditation process.
Exposure to 100% oxygen under pressure in a Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Chamber has been proven to promote tissue growth and assist in wound healing. Hackettstown Medical Center's Wound Healing Center offers two Hyperbaric Oxygen Chambers. Two Certified Hyperbaric Oxygen RN's and two Certified Hyperbaric Oxygen Technicians are on staff to guide patients through their treatments, under the oversight of board certified physicians.
"Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is beneficial because, despite good wound care, it's often the only thing that can help certain problematic wounds heal," explained Eric L. Gross, M.D., FACS, and Medical Director of the Wound Healing Center.
"Our Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy program allows us to bring the best possible wound care to the local community," added Dr. Gross. "'It says a great deal that our locally placed hospital can achieve such a high level of wound care for our patients."
