Members sought for
Joan Knechel Memorial Walk committee

We have been blessed with great people who are willing to work hard to make this event a success year in and year out, said Marie Accetturo, the groups chairperson. But were always striving to make the Walk even better, and one way to do that is to add new members to our committee.  Everybody has something new to offer and we want to tap into that and find ways to attain even greater success.

In addition to Accetturo, the groups steering committee includes former chair Liza Thomas, Joyce Mowder, Ginger Brady and Sarah Brelvi.  Just over 20 additional volunteers round out this strong, dedicated committee.

This past year, more than 375 walkers, many of whom know or knew cancer patients, or are cancer survivors themselves, took part in the Mountain Lake (Liberty Township) walk. Dr. Nancy Low, Director of the Cancer Center, was the Honorary Chair of last years Walk.  The 2007 Walk will be chaired by Evelyn Self of sanofi aventis.

Joan Knechel passed away from cancer in September 2002. A former nurse at Hackettstown Community Hospital (now HRMC), she was known as a giving person who would help you in anyway she could.  Joan had a particularly soft spot in her heart for those battling cancer, and she made it her mission to offer them as much support as possible, even in the midst of her own illness.

The Joan Knechel Memorial Walk committee meets at HRMC at 7 p.m. on the second Wednesday of most every month. Anyone is welcome to join the committee and interested parties are encouraged to attend a meeting to see how talents and interests can be utilized to help this great cause.

Money raised by HRMC Foundation programs and events such as the Joan Knechel Memorial Walk have been used for new medical equipment, advanced levels of technology and expansion projects at the hospital.
